So, this is officially the last weekend of the summer and I have no reason not to be adding to my blog. Well actually, I can always make up a reasonable excuse to be doing something else – but enjoying the summer is now no longer one of them.
To get this season of blogging started I thought I would post some of the more interesting items to that have come across my screen.
Academic Earth was by far the most interesting item that I found. First – in the way I found it, I saw it on a CBC business newscast. It is something I would never have thought of searching for. But, once I heard about it I just went WOW! Proving that you can’t ignore other media just because you have a killer website.
The site contains hundreds, maybe thousands, of webcast of university level courses and lectures. By university level, I don’t mean one of those Internet specials offering MBAs. I mean Stanford, Berkeley and MIT level universities. The courses are fascinating and cover a wide variety of topics including several hundred lecture on Entrepreneurship.
While not at the same level as Academic Earth these two articles from Business Week are MUST READ for any small business owner. Why Your Advertising Isn’t Working has great insight into advertising for both large and small businesses.
In one of my past lives, when I put on trade shows, I was continually struck by the number of businesses spending considerable amounts of money with little or no return. Business Week’s Getting the Most Out of a Trade Show Booth: 22 Tips hits some of high points to consider. One that I would add – get a detailed layout of the facility. I once booked a space that looked to be by one of the entrances only to find out it was a fire exit, the entrance was at the other end of the building. (A costly mistake on my part.)
Finally, one of the best books on advertising, and possibly the only one you will ever need is now in the public domain. Scientific Advertising can be downloaded as a pdf. And, if you think a book written over 75 years ago can’t be relevent today, you are wrong.
