CPC Price vs Volume

I was researching an article on using ‘long tail’ keywords and came across a suprising bit of data. There is not correlation between the search volume and the Cost Per Click (CPC) of Google Adwords.

One of the keyword phrases I was targeting was ‘internet marketing’. Plugging that into the Google Keyword Tool and you get a list of the top 150 related search terms. You also have the option of turning on the data for ‘Average Est. CPC’ as reported by Google Adwords. Turn that on and things get confusing.

The most popular search term, not surprisingly as ‘internet marketing’. The search volume for December was 1,830,000 and the CPC was $6.50 – which should put you in one of the top three positions.

However, that term was not the most expensive. That distinction goes to ‘internet marketing and advertising company’ for $14.10. Infact, according to Google, the five most expensive terms related to ‘internet marketing’ all has less than 10,000 in search volume.

The expensive and highly targeted keyword phrases such as ‘internet marketing and advertising company’ are relying on the query string to filter the potential clients to a few thousand. However, a better strategy may be to build a target ad and get a larger exposure at a lower price.

My only advice is to do your homework before you launch your Adwords campaign. Look for value opportunities. (For searches related to ‘internet marketing’ the best terms cost less than $7.00.) And, of course test and measure.

Resource List for Dec 10th Workshop

I will be conducting a workshop on "What Every Business Owner Should Know To Maximize Investment In A Website.". (And, no I didn’t pick the title.) With such a huge topic – I thought I had better write a resource list for the attendees. Then I thought – why not share it with everyone.

It is by no means complete – but it is a start. And, the blogs in particular will lead you to even more information.

Selling To Americans

American’s are patriotic. All things being equal they will ‘Buy American’. One of the challenges to international business selling in the United States is to over come the ‘Buy American’ instinct.

There are three distinct strategies a company can employ. The first is deliver a product that is either a unique, superior or cheaper, second be seen to be American, and third pretend to be American.

A New Video Strategy

How fast do things change in the Internet — FAST.

Last April I wrote a post (Going Viral What Makes It Work) on getting a video to go viral. It recommended that the video not look to professional – rather something that anyone could, with enough talent, produce.

By summer that was already out dated. The top viral video as tracked by Visible Measures was dominated by the large ad agencies.

Olympic Torch Arrives in Comox

Public events can be a great way to bring traffic to your website. News worthy event, such as the Olympic Torch Relay, generate a lot of search engine traffic. To take advantage of these events you need to do two things. First be fast and second have a tie-in to your business.

In the age of digital cameras on cell phones being fast is becoming easier. The problem, of course, is everyone has the same advantage. The good news it – not everyone is taking advantage of it.

A Plumber in the Bronx

Even impulse buying needs a ‘pain’. A ‘pain’ is a need or desire that your customer wants to ease. It may be the need to fix a leaky faucet or it may be the desire to own a ‘cute’ object. With impulse buying, this desire may be completely physiological but this doesn’t make it less real. However, without the ‘pain’ there is no sale.

For your website to succeed you first need to attract customers that have a need for your product. Then you must tell them how your product will ease their pain.

A corollary to easing a ‘pain’ is the ‘pain’ must exist NOW. A website for a service, such as a plumber, will only make a sale when the customer has need of at plumber.

UGC – Your Most Valuable Asset

UGC – User Generated Content, recently took another big step forward when Etys, an online store front for hand made and vintage articles, turned to its clients for advertising ideas. They ran a contest for 30 second video promoting Etsy. The results, seen at http://tv.etsy.com/, not only capture the spirit of the company but are innovative and entertaining. As Bob Garfield puts it in Ad Age:

The results are positively remarkable. The 10 semi-finalists are as a group better thought-out and realized than any 10 random commercial running on TV anywhere in the world. And a whole lot more charming. As for the three finalists, each is a means of telling the Etsy story in the Etsy-ish of ways.

A Summer Recap

So, this is officially the last weekend of the summer and I have no reason not to be adding to my blog. Well actually, I can always make up a reasonable excuse to be doing something else – but enjoying the summer is now no longer one of them.

To get this season of blogging started I thought I would post some of the more interesting items to that have come across my screen.

Google Ad Planner at 1 Year

As you may have noticed – I am a big Google fan. In particular I like the way Google supports the business community.

Of course it is in their best interest to support the community that pays its bills. However, what I really like is the general nature of much of the information. If I want to use Googles online research tools and then use that information to advertise with Yahoo or Bing or any other site I am free to do so. Nothing to join – no fees to pay.
