Facebook – Now You See It – Now You Don’t

Facebook just released a migration tool that lets you migrate your profile to a ‘business page’. And, as with most things Facebook does – it has its own set of twists and turns. Which was fine – I managed to get everything changed on my account.

I planned on doing a few client accounts on Monday, once I had finished testing everything with my own account – but the tool has been removed.

Kubuntu – Lucid Lynx (10.04.1)

It was time to buy a new computer. My old no-name white box wasn’t able to keep up with all the demands of web development. I like to keep a number of programs open three browsers, a virtual box loaded with XP, email, ftp, and eclipse are the minimum. Also, there are Apache, ssh and mySQL servers running in the background. Not a particularly heavy load but it was starting to bog down my old system.

HP Mini – Time for an Update Pt1

Although I am on my computer daily, and I have lots of hi-tech bells and whistles, I didn’t have a wireless router. All my systems are hard wired. Not only for security, but since I didn’t have a need for one since up until two months ago I didn’t have a portable computer.

Of course my new netbook changed that a bit. It worked well while I was on the road. But, when I was at home my desktop seemed like a better solution. Then the weather got REAL NICE. Working out on the porch or by my new fish pond seemed more civilized.

Google Ad Planner at 1 Year

As you may have noticed – I am a big Google fan. In particular I like the way Google supports the business community.

Of course it is in their best interest to support the community that pays its bills. However, what I really like is the general nature of much of the information. If I want to use Googles online research tools and then use that information to advertise with Yahoo or Bing or any other site I am free to do so. Nothing to join – no fees to pay.

A Fresh Look At Twitter

I am starting to change my mind about Twitter. At first I couldn’t see why anyone would bother with the service. But, more and more, I am seeing posts that point out how Twiiter can (should) be used.

In this interview Avinash Kaushik looks at some inovative ways of using Twitter and more important, how to measure your success on Twitter.

For those of you who are not familiar with Avinash, he is the Analytics evangelist for Google. His blog Occam’s Razor is a ‘must read’ for anyone interested in tracking the performance of their business website. He has made a large number of videos on Analytics in general and has the knack of taking, what could be a dry subject, into an interesting view.

A few days ago I entered the Canadian Blogging Idol contest. For that contest I wrote a review of the HP Mini 1000 MIE.

I will be writing an more in depth review here but for now please visit Canadian Blogging Idol site and view my article. A vote for the article would be appreciated

Focus – Focus – Focus

While my wife does the shopping I usually head over to the magazine isle and browse through the latest issues. Most of the time I just browse – but every now and then something catches my eye – like this line in the editorial in this months Profit Magazine, "It’s said that great companies focus on doing just one thing really well."

I have blogged on focusing your business before. But, it is worth repeating. In tough times, many businesses are trying to diversify – to find that one ‘Silver Bullet’ that will make the business profitable. Too often the result is not focusing on what they do well but trying to do a bit of everything.

This strategy never works.

Changing the focus of your business can be a ‘good thing’. However, the operative word is focus. Don’t try to do everything. If what you are doing now isn’t working you have two options. Either continue to do what you are doing – but do it better. Or, try something else. Trying to do both is not an option.
